Barry Guy: Statements II EX.
Statement II was written as a solo double bass piece in 1972 and examined a few of the many areas that I had been working on in terms of the expansion of the instrument's timbral resources, particularly through the use of amplification. In Statements II EX. the material used is wholly derived from the solo piece with the small orchestra colouring and emphasising these areas, thereby being almost an extension to the instrument itself. The work is not a concerto in the accepted sense of the word - more an integration of soloist and ensemble.
