Programme Note

Composer note:
Fold was commissioned by and written for New Noise, with funding by the Arts Council of Ireland.

The material folds and unfolds. When it unfolds it does so in a spectral manner by falling or rising through the overtone series. I could not resist a quiet rebellion when asked by Joby to write a piece for his group called New Noise. I thought of dear old Cage’s comment about noise versus consonance and dissonance, and decided I’d like to make a strange, overtone-derived consonance the subject of the piece.

The acoustic ensemble of oboe, clarinet, piano, and percussion is supplemented by absolutely precisely tuned samples and light electronics (triggered by one of the players) to enable the sustained journeys through the overtone series.
