Programme Note
Henri Tomasi's Divertimento Corsica for Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and String Orchestra is a kind of concerto grosso in homage to his Corsican roots, featuring the oboe, clarinet and bassoon as main protagonists, all three of them metaphors of the ancient instruments of the Mediterranean. The concerto's harmony is expanded and non-functional, and the musical discourse is buoyed by the melody and rhythm, as in the initial paghjella.
The work is infused with the traditional music of Corsica, the Isle of Beauty. In the four tableaux that make up this celestial and nostalgic page, Tomasi's approach reminds us of Bartok, finding his inspiration in Eastern European folklore.
