The music to 2x2x5 is entitled To Herbert Brün, and is, as the title suggests, dedicated to Herbert Brün (1918-2000). Brün, a composer, political activist, pioneer of algorithmic composition, and professor of music at the University of Illinois, was a wonderful figure in my life. We did not always agree, but that was part of the fun. He was an inspirational man who opened up an entire new world to me. I still hear him saying, in his strong Jewish-German accent “you must write the music that you do not like YET!” For him, music was never “business as usual”, and, for me, in these 3 pieces, nothing is taken for granted. I am indebted to the musicians of the Crash Ensemble for indulging me, and spending lots of time in the studio beforehand investigating different possibilities.
