Programme Note

Composer Note:
North Wall has its origins in a little riff that appeared in an earlier, very very short piano piece of mine called North Circular. Both are inspired by districts in North Dublin. North Wall is much more expansive, varied, virtuosic and volatile. An image provoked North Wall. Nowadays the US Embassy obliges you to go to a strange depot near Dublin Port to collect your processed visa. Driving back from the depot, I saw a bunch of teenagers from the North Wall area all in diving suits (from God-knows-where) jumping off the quays to swim in the Liffey. It seemed both joyful and dangerous, and somehow really fitting for Dublin. I was happy to leave Dublin, but sights like this also made me realise that it was a unique place. That energy inspires this short piece for piano.
