Monument for Beethoven

O God! Direct my mind!
O God! Raise me up from this grievous depth!

Thou art present throughout the world.

Dona pacem, pacem. (Give us peace, peace.)

Composer's Note
Based on the words of Beethoven's Last Prayer and on Beethoven's music, 'Monument for Beethoven is a humble tribute to a Master. The final section quotes from the closing bars of the 'Missa Solemnis'. (J.T.)

The opening direction on the score of the recently-late John Tavener's Monument for Beethoven is "Awesome, monumental", and the music lives up to it. The piece's juxtaposition of mighty chords, choral whispers and torrential downpours of notes on the organ will hold no surprise for Tavener fans and un-fans. The music made its point very quickly, arriving a quarter of an hour later at a quote from the end of the Missa solemnis.
