Programme Note

This trio is actually a duo, consisting of a stringed organism and a piano organism. The strings are longing away from the restrictions of the piano, which rule the piece from the beginning to the end. This longing endures, even over the doublebars from the first to the second movement.

In this respect, Dedications is a “restricted” piece, overloaded with rules and organisation, and the energy and emotions of the piece derives solely from the longing away from those restrictions. Since the rules of the first movement are feeding a “machine”, which runs fast, it is as if they overpower and drown the strings with their slower tempo towards the end of the movement. The slower tempo of the piano in the second movement gives the strings enough space to breathe – they even scream at the end.

Performance notes: an accidental is only valid to the note it precedes.
