Programme Note
Composer's Note:
To me, each of these instruments embodies a whole culture and its history. The struggles, the joy, the art, and the expression of past generations are engrained in the wood, strings, and performance techniques. In Oud, Viola, Piano, I tried to create a space in which each of the musicians can bring to light the beauty of his or her instrument and express the human spirit as it struggles with the suffering of the world.
The piece has four main motifs – three for each instrument and one tutti element. The motifs are exchanged between the instruments and presented in different combinations. The form is ABCABCA.
