In the Tower was written for the World New Music Days 2009. The commission was for a piece of “tower music”, ideally in several short movements, which was to sound from a castle balcony while people were entertained below. The work’s title is taken from a poem by Gustaf Fröding. From poet’s church tower he notes how one might watch as the town comes to life on a beautiful spring morning.

Och som när ögon slås upp, så firar
från fönstren stan sina rullgardiner,
och stan han morgnar sig, stan han plirar
mot morgonsolen, som ler och skiner.

”And as eyes are opened, the town pulls
its curtains from the windows,
and the town is in his morning state, he peers
to the morning sun, who laughs and shines.”

The piece is written in five movements. It is possible to perform each one as independent works or even change the order of the movements. They are composed as to be heard from a certain distance. Each movement portrays a musical picture of town life as witness from afar, high up in a tower.
