Programme Note
Benjamin Britten Te Deum in C (1934)
The composition draft is dated 'July 11th-17th 1934'. The orchestral version (commissioned by the BBC) contains cues in the string parts so that it may be performed with one instrument per part; at its first performance Britten played viola. [The programme indicates only a quintet was used, but a pencil annotation on the BPL copy states 2,2,2,2,1.] See also Jubilate Deo in C, p. 122
