Programme Note

Shine Forth a Path of Stars is a diptych of songs for tenor and piano on poems by the
distinguished Scottish writer, Peter Davidson. Commissioned by the Scottish
Parliament for their Jacobite Exhibition (October 2010), they suggest, through music,
some of the important themes of the Jacobite period. The first song, set here in a
reflective and descriptive style - with the piano exploiting its whole register to
present both the earth and star-filled Heavens - is a pilgrim’s vision at the point of
death. The second, presented here in a more sombre, understated way – a kind of
modern folksong - reflects the feelings of loss which coloured the Jacobite art and
literature of this period.
