Programme Note

Christian Hymns are often sung in the South African church on the day of a wedding. However, a number of traditional melodies are still used to which hymn words are set.

This song is usually sung during the signing of the register. The words, translated literally, mean:

You said, you said,
O our father,
You who created people,
You created two.
Thay are male and female,
You said the word which still stands today.
Let that man cleave to his wife and children.

The lower voices sing syllables. They have no particular meaning, but are simply a musical accompaniment.

An English version of the lyrics has been provided by Pete Seeger:

It is written, It is written, I have seen it,
That we two should be as one.
And no matter, and no matter what befalls us
So may it be till life is done.
Through sickness and health,
Through hardship or wealth,
Whether for better or worse, we will be,
Together, yes together, for the future,
And for the tasks that wait you and me.
