Programme Note

QUARTINA

The piano piece entitled "Quartina" was composed in 1983. Its central idea is manifested in
three basic motifs rhyming with one-another, including their variants. Each of the three basic motifs consists of a melodic line built of four tunes. It is not only in the said tonal build-up that the number four plays an emphatic role, but also in the quadruplicity of the minor structural units. It is this to which the title of the work refers. In the same way as the "tercet" is a familiar concept in poetry, similarly the title "Quartina" wishes to emphasize
the quadruplex character inherent in the composition.

In the musical lace of the entire composition, the four-tone motifs are completed with a multi-tonal, ritornello-like motto coming up repeatedly. The contrasting role is undertaken by fast episodes of simpler rhythmic construction.

In the epilogue completing the work the author has exploited the possibilities of the various timbres of the piano. In the final notes of the work the opening four-tone melody is reiterated in forte.

Each of the motifs of "Quartina" attaches to a given register of the piano. Furthermore, the individual registers and timbres incorporate a constant structural principle within each formal unit. As the melodic colours, harmonies and structures are getting enriched gradually, so also the form expands, generating a sense of continuity.
