SINFONIETTA
The first movement is short, pianissimo, allegro molto, in the style of an introduction, as if preparing the second movement, Canone alla prima, which contains in the first trumpet part one of the main themes of the composition. The subsequent echo-like motive is a variation of this theme. The musical material is diverse and varied in colour and structure. The richness of colour is enhanced by (amongst other things) the use of three different kinds of mute.
The prestissimo third movement - motivic in structure- makes demands on the players similar to those made of a string quartet: its light and fleeting main theme is played not only by the trumpets, but also by the heavier trombones. After the dactylic middle section, contrasting in dynamics and structure, the main theme returns in the form of a variation.
The fourth movement follows the idea of gradual development primarily of harmonic concept. The polyphonic, rhythmically complex structure uses the high register of the trumpets. In the following section the horn has a significant part: this melody, which "speaks" and "sings", is mainly accompanied by muted trumpet and trombone chords. The fifth movement, and the whole work, ends with a trumpet tune and a short imitative codetta.
The Sinfonietta is played by four trumpets, four trombones, one horn and a tuba. It was commissioned by the Philip Jones Brass ensemble and is dedicated to them.
