Programme Note
My father regularly sang the opening fragment of a carol. It went:
"As Joseph was a-walking, he heard an angel sing: "This night there shall be born on earth our heavenly king.”
He could not remember any more than this, and had no idea where he had heard it. The most likely explanation is that it was used in a carol service in Bristol Cathedral in the 1940s, when Hubert Hunt was organist and Walford Davies was regularly in attendance. I have never been able to find a copy of this carol; but the tune seemed too good to pass into oblivion.
