Peter Dickinson: Swansongs for Cello and Piano (1992)

Swansongs, in a single movement, was commissioned by Penelope Lynex, with funds from Greater London Arts, and given its first performances on her tours in 1994 in New Zealand and Australia. Its starting point is the tune that all cellists play - Saint-Saëns' Le Cygne from his Le Carnaval des Animaux (1922). I have brought this tune into conjunction with a blues - another kind of swan song. The process becomes obvious when the two melodies alternate after the climax of the fast music in the centre
