Programme Note
The title refers to the two contrasted movements of the piece:
1)Dance
2)Prayer
A contrast in mood, character, and sonority, yet a unity in the choice of the material. A somewhat Oriental mode that is both Mediterranean and Mittel-European.
The first movement rings with asymmetrical rhythms reminiscent of a Balkan festivity. The second movement is like a lament, a synagogue chant or a desert song. It is the multifarious baggage of nomadic peoples (Jews, Gypsies, Bedouins…), the quest for quintessence, for humaneness beyond places.
Diptyque is dedicated to Jean LEBER who premiered it in concert
(june 2002) and performed it for the play Le Golem by Jacques Kraemer.
