Synopsis:
Three men and an inspector intrude upon Carter Jones, a black student and warn him that he is known to their superiors. Although innocent, he is pursued by the law and ridiculed by his friends and neighbours. He gets no help from the Legal Aid Society, his uncle, or the preacher to whom he turns in his final desperation. Wandering hopelessly through the streets, Carter Jones is pursued to his death. Following the funeral, a procession of humanity voices its feelings of guilt.
