The evening opened with Gunther Schuller’s “Dramatic Overture,” a 12-tone work of tremendous drive, intensity and feelingfor which Mr. Schuller, who was on hand, deserved his share of the audience’s enthusiasm.
John Gruen, Herald Tribune,5/15/1965
Mr. Schuller’s work is a flashing and absorbing kaleidoscope of orchestral color and moods.
Raymond Ericson, The New York Times,5/15/1965
The “Dramatic Overture” made a fine concert opener, for it was brilliant, brassily American and dramatic as its name implies.
