Programme Note

Work on my Second Piano Concerto began on June 2, 1993 and was completed on October of that year. While similar in structure to Metamorphosis, my first concerto, it varies greatly with respect to the size of the orchestra (significantly larger in this case) and in the variety of the virtuosic demands made on the soloist. The solo part was composed expressly for Christopher O’Riley – in fact The Enchanted Garden (Preludes, Book I) which Mr. O’Riley premiered and recorded in 1992 is in many ways a series of “Essays Before a Concerto.”

The subtitles of the three movements of the work, “Premonition,” “Lamentation,” and “A Cosmic Riddle,” bespeak of an issue in our world which has become impossible to ignore; namely the need for personal, social, and spiritual transformation… My concerto is not so much an answer to these issues as it is a pondering a dark time ahead. My concerto is not so much an answer to these issues as it is a pondering of the questions that arise within the scenario and context of the individual (the soloist), with his community at large (the orchestra).
