Programme Note
Water Wheel with Mantras was a winner in the December 2015 New Zealand Symphony Orchestra TODD Corporation Young Composers Award. It also won the players’ Orchestra’s Choice Award.
Composer note:
Water Wheel with Mantras is based around a repeating cycle of the twelve major triads, arranged by fourths in a perpetual plagal cadence, over which many layers of material are painted and allowed to accumulate. This structure is twice interrupted by fragments of melodic lines, presented in heterophony. The work ends with a glimpse of new material.
