Eric Whitacre Songs of Immortality
"Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed" and "After Great Pain" were commissioned by The American Friends of The London Symphony Chorus and first performed on 24 October 2010 at the Barbican Hall, London, by the London Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, conducted by Eric Whitacre.
"Do not go gentle into that good night" was commissioned by the Rundfunkchor Berlin and its chief conductor, Simon Halsey.

The world premiere of the complete work took place on 15 April 2012 at Berliner Philharmonie, Germany with the Rundfunkchor Berlin and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, conducted by Eric Whitacre.

Dylan Thomas' 'Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed', which clung to tenuous harmonies until asserting fabulous defiance with the words 'Open a pathway through the slow sad sail'. Emily Dickinson then chronicled the 'letting go' on a final tone that was in every sense eternal.
