Synopsis:
The opera is set on the Italian coast in the Middle Ages. After the defeat of his forces Marco goes into exile. His wife, Mariana, believing him dead, marries Claudio, head of his enemies. Marco returns during the wedding festivities and a duel between the two men seems imminent. To prevent this Mariana takes poison and as she dies she clasps the hands of both her husbands.
