Programme Note

Composer note:
Concordance came into being in response to a commission from the Concord Chamber Music Society, Wendy Putnam, director. The request was for a Piano Quartet in which I could participate as pianist in performance. The Society, which features members of the Boston Symphony as well as occasional guests, has shown admirable interest in sponsoring and performing new work as well as the chamber music standards.

The premiere took place in January 2013 at the Concord Academy in Concord, Massachusetts, hence the name Concordance.

The composition, about 15 minutes in duration, is in one continuous movement, but the continuity explores music of considerable contrast and variety. The prevailing expression is lyrical though some violent episodes intrude. In many respects the phrase structure is more regular than one finds in much of my other music, and obvious tonal references are discreetly cultivated. Perhaps my favorite music in the composition occurs halfway through with an episode of little motion and almost no harmonic change, suggesting a vision of timelessness and calm. Eventually this evolves into the conclusion of the piece where all seems to dissolve and spin away into the unknown.
