Programme Note

Epigrams for soprano and chamber orchestra was commissioned by the Fromm Foundation. The work is based on Epigrams, especially written by the Greek poet and philosopher Takis Antoniou. The whole character of the music is influenced by Byzantine music, especially in the melodic line (with microtones and grace notes) and hummed and sustained notes as well. The music never "undercolors" words or phrases. It is the composer's hope that the music creates only the "dimension," the "dramatic atmosphere" and the "appropriate surroundings" of this text. — Theodore Antoniou
