The Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra was commissioned for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, its principal trumpet player Adolph Herseth, and music director Sir Georg Solti as part of an ongoing series of major compositions made possible by the Edward F. Schmidt Family Foundation Endowment Fund. The Concerto was premiered in Orchestra Hall, Chicago on February 11, 1988.The second movement may be performed alone under the title
