Programme Note
Giya Kancheli Time and Again (1997)
Composer note:

Time…and again makes use of crucial and characteristic themes from some of my recent works. It constitutes the conclusion of a creative period which led me from Trauerfarbenes Land to Valse Boston, and with it I take leave of an unusual epoch in which I experienced contradictions, doubts, great losses, and novel and unfamiliar feelings and emotions…Although I have prefaced this work with words from the Bible – what I write is true. God knows I am not lying – I am fully aware of the fact that honesty is not, by any stretch of the imagination, necessarily indicative of quality.

...Kancheli is a composer who discovered a completely formed practice that allows him to enter the same creative “room” again and again, and for him there’s something always new and important to discover and transcribe therein... Time...and again is a violin sonata in all but name...V&V [with] rich sonority...suggests a soundtrack to a darkly serious middle- European film...The Piano Quartet...shows a great range of materials, its contrasts are striking, it works to a furious climax...and then away in a beautiful coda... There is no doubt, yet again, about the authenticity and sincerity of Kancheli’s vision. His musical craft is exactly calibrated to his expressive intent. The performances are immaculate.
