Karnavalingo, a short lively work for orchestra, draws on the musical culture of my mother's beautiful homeland of Perú. Despite its size, this small Andean nation boasts a rich and varied sound, commingling native Indian, African, and Spanish influences. In Karnavalingo, syncopated rhythms common to the "karnavalito" style proliferate, as do typical gestures such as notes incessantly repeated (like the panpipe-inspired "chuta" figure and overlapping trumpet calls, brightly sounded. Of course, as I put my own spin on these salient elements, I'm hoping to join what is essentially a constantly evolving tradition despite roots firmly entrenched in the past.
This work is dedicated to Edward Doughtie, a beloved English professor and residential college master at Will Rice College of Rice University, who passed away in the spring of 2014. Ed, an accomplished amateur violinist/violist, enthusiastically encouraged my own fledgling efforts as a freshman composition major at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and remained a lifelong cheerleader as my life blossomed as a musician, which I'll always treasure.
