Programme Note
Stilleben for cello and piano was composed after having read "Lust for life" by Irving Stone (1903-1989), a biographical novel based Vincent van Gogh¹s tragic life hence the title "Stilleben".
The work was revised for practical purposes in 1991 and 1999, but remains to all intents and purposes the same piece I composed as a sixteen-year-old. The work is built on an underlying twelve-note row, but after an extended break which divides the piece in two, the underlying structures no longer seem capable of supporting the music. The "weak-willed" notes suddenly find new strength in the repetition of a melodic fragment, however, bringing the piece to its climax.
