Programme Note

One of the definitions of the Latin noun concentus is "a sounding together." Concentus for chamber orchestra, in the spirit of this definition, aspires to serve as an opportunity for musicians to enjoy harmonizing with one another. It contains a number of symmetries in its one movement, including themes that are partly mirror-inversions of each other, that "swap" tonal areas, or that have important pitches in common. In this and other ways the music, as I think of it, looks back on itself or seeks to harmonize with itself — an aspect also reflected in the title.
