        Programme Note

        Impromptu was commissioned and premiered by the Society for New Music in 1984. My idea was to write a fanciful sequence of outwardly contrasting sections — there are five — but to relate them all motivically beneath the surface. The latter three sections are actually variations on one melodic line.
