Programme Note

The RESPONSE I-IV series was written during the years 1966-1977. In the four works of the series, different combinations of instruments engage in a dialogue with a 19-minute tape element.

In Response II, it is solo percussion who engage in this dialogue with the tape element consisting of electronic as well as concrete material.

My interest in the rich sound-world of the percussion instruments - especially the metal instruments of Oriental origin: cymbals, gongs, bells etc.- gives RESPONSE FOR SOLO PERCUSSION AND ELECTRONIC ELEMENT its special flavour. The percussion's manyfold timbral resources engage here in a dialogue with the electronic element, which consists of both pure electronic sounds (sinus, tones etc.) as well as pre-recorded (and sometimes distorted). The electronic sound create a kind of cantus firmus against which the player will tell his tale; sometimes the sounds will interweave and be in harmony, sometimes conflict and dissonance will prevail. This gives rise to an energetic and polyphonic alternation which develops into a long, neurotic, suggestive tarrying around the fundamental notes.
