Programme Note

In the Partita for 6 basses of 1982 Nordheim demonstates the wealth of harmonic possibilities it is possible to generate within the confines of a small and relatively unusual ensemble. In the spirit of Pythagoras a rich assortment of flageolette tones permeate the musical discourse, securing an exciting breadth of frequencies and the sumptuos colouristic nuances of the harmonic spectrum. Nordheim has given very fanciful and developmentally illustrative titles to each of the Partita's movements:

"Passinato is the first movement with its fairly obvious mixture of passacaglia, passion and ostinato, while Morgana is a play of flageolett tones where each of the strings' peculiar interval frequencies (see Pythagoras) resonate in fleeting reflection. In the last movement's Avanti we meet the fugue in its imperfect assault against remembrance's barrier." - Arne Nordheim

The work is dedicated to the composer Finn Mortensen on the occasion of his sixitieth birthday.
