Programme Note

The Danish term "Cellokoncert" is a brilliantly useful small term, and I wish it could have worked as the title for my new piece for Morten Zeuthen and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. But unfortunately it didn't. The piece is a long process (same tempo for half an hour) and the term "koncert" just doesn’t fit. It relates more to the concept of 'scene', 'situation' or, as it is so popular these days, 'landscape'. The piece could as well have been called 'Landscape with cello'.

There are places, things and creatures. There are, and there aren't. They appear together or on their own. Illuminate each other. Support each other, step on each other's toes. In parts followed by mild chaos.

The piece starts with the meeting of eight double basses and a cello. 20 minutes later - after various combinations - at last the piece finds simplicity and clarity - and what was missing: QUIET
