Programme Note
Diferencias is the old Spanish word for variations and there were many compositions in this particular form written during the 16th and 17th centuries.
The present piece consists of five sections, each one being a set of variations. As the title implies, all the ideas are Spanish in character. The first section uses a long slow tune, somewhat Moorish in character, while the second is based on an old and live medieval tune from Valencia (this is the only actual folk tune used). There follows a Guajira - a dance using the characteristic alternating rhythm of two and three. After a slow section based on a very simple motif, the work ends with a fandango - one of the oldest forms of 'Dance/Song' in Spain.
The work is scored for four Trumpets, Horn , four Trombones and Tuba and the writing makes considerable use of different types of mutes.
