Programme Note

As part of my studies (at the tender age of 14) with Norwegian composer Magne Hegdal, I wrote a few small piano pieces - or rather „studies” based on different tone-rows. Later on, in 1982, I arranged some of these piano-studies for Woodwind Trio (fl/ob/cl); much later, at the mature age of 42, I was somehow drawn back to these miniature pieces, which, despite their simplicity, already contained one of the most important features of my music: the endeavour to discover and carve out characteristic melodic patterns in a given material, in this case: the tone-rows.

I decided to re-compose the woodwind trio pieces in a rather Stravinskian manner and I choose the same instrumentation, the same 12 instruments, as did Stravinsky for his CONCERTINO (1952, published by Wilhelm Hansen), with its „grumbling” bassoons and its „feminine” strings.

My Four Miniatures are dedicated to the memory of the late clarinettist Hans Petter Bonden and the late bassoonist Arne Hellan for their participation and inspiration in founding the first formation of the Oslo Sinfonietta in 1986.
