Programme Note

Equinoxe (2002/03)

Dedicated to TM+

Equinox is the time where light and darkness takes up an equal amount of the hours of the day. At the same time equinox is not a stable, permanent condition, rather it is always a movement toward the dominance of either darkness or light.

An essential epicentre of ideas in the piece is established by a condition of balance and at the same time by their (natural?) temporality. Both metaphorical descriptions of musical qualities, for example ‘light’ and ‘darkness’, exact or approximate symmetries and ideas such as ‘medium values’ and ‘deviations’ influence control of the musical parameters of the piece.

The movement of the piece principally progresses toward the domination of darkness and as motto for the piece stands a sentence by Uffe Harder from his poem cycle Vintersuite (1984): "Darkness makes its way far over the day."
