The Calm was originally written as a ballet for The London Contemporary Dance Theatre, choreographed by Siobhan Davies.

It was premiered at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England in September 1974.

This arrangement was made by the composer.

The Calm is concerned with the interplay of differing temperaments in human behaviour, with two contrasting approaches represented by two couples, the more lively and excitable gradually being calmed by the other.
