Programme Note
This work is a setting of a sixteenth-century poem which is a plea for death to come and bring an end to suffering, thereby affording peace.
It is in the form of a chaconne, the four-bar bass figure being repeated twenty-eight times in all. The music begins quietly, and the voices enter one after the other from the basses upwards. The alto entry is a quote from the familiar ‘dies irae’ plainchart. When all the voices have entered and reached a climax, there is an organ solo, beginning very loudly and slowly fading back to ‘piano’. The voices re-enter with more serene music, and the work ends very quietly with the organ alone.
