Programme Note

BRIGHT CECILIA - Variation "Thou tun'st"

This variation was written as one of a set commmissioned from several
composers by BBC Music Magazine to mark the magazine's 10th anniversary.
The other composers were Magnus Lindberg, Colin Matthews, Anthony Payne,
Poul Ruders, David Sawer and Michael Torke. The subject of the variations
is a movement called "Thou Tun'st This World" from Purcell's Ode to St.
Cecilia (1692). The first performance of the variation set was given at
the Last Night of the Proms on 14 September 2002 by the BBC Symphony
Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin.

My own variation contrasts high, fast, bright writing for wind and
violins with a counterbalancing low, slow, mysterious chorale for muted
lower strings, contrabassoon and timpani. J.W.
