Programme Note

This setting of the missa brevis was written as a tribute to the Spanish
Renaissance composer Victoria, who inspired Tavener throughout his
life. The final movement (Agnus Dei ) includes a quotation from Victoria’s
O Vos Omnes from the Tenebrae Responsories.

Missa Wellensis was first performed on Sunday 18th May 2014 during the festival new
music wells 74-14, by Wells Cathedral Choir conducted by Matthew Owens. It was
commissioned by Cathedral Commissions of Wells Cathedral, through the generous
