Programme Note

Holland Park Avenue Study was inspired by a painting of the same name by Mark boyle that is currently displayed at the Tate Liverpool Modern British Art Museum, the work was commissioned by COMA and written in 2002. The theme follows on from my recent works inspired by nature.

The painting Holland Park Avenue Study forms part of a project – Journey to the Centre of the Earth – which has been in progress since the mid-1060s by Mark Boyle and his family. The project involves the duplication of a thousand sites across the world which are selected from a map at random. Holland Park Avenue Study is one of a series of a hundred sites selected from an area in West London.

Although the painting is two metres square, I feel the work spreads endlessly beyond the picture frame to west London and onwards to the rest of the world. I was attracted to Mark Boyle’s simple yet complex lines and his contrast of colours.
