Programme Note

As the pure, pollution-free New Zealand air.
Kyeburn Diggings is one of the frantically active Otago gold-mining areas of the last century. Even today its mountain ranges seem to advance like giant lines of surf, breathtakingly impressive, but pastorally quiet and abandoned.

The first and second movements are played without a break, similarly the third and fourth.
The work is a commission by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
