Programme Note
The composition is a part of a vast project ("Kalevala of the Artists") to celebrate in 2009 the 160th anniversary of the Finnish national epos Kalevala. Ten Finnish composers and painters were invited to create a work based on a given section of the Kalevala poems.
Sallinen wrote his piano quintet using some of the central motifs of his opera Kullervo. This 16 minutes piece does not attempt to portray the story or the contents of the Kullervo poems - the three elegies can rather be considered as free impressions, characteristic of the chamber musical expression based on the tragic and violent story.
The work was commissioned by the Kalevala Foundation and was premiered on 'Kalevala Day', the 28th February 2009, by Roope Gröndal (piano) and The New Helsinki Quartet at the Ateneum, Helsinki
