Programme Note

When I was asked by the London Sinfonietta to write a short piece in commemoration of the Duke Ellington Centenary, I very quickly decided not to even try to do a piece in the style of Ellington - that would be pretty suicidal - but compose a Ruders piece for the forces at hand. And owing to the nature of the commission, give the composition a 'bigbandish face', rhythmically and sound-wise. Needless to say, the diligent listener will certainly spot a few 'hats-off’ to the Duke here and there, although there're hardly any direct quotations as such in the music.

The title, though, is a straightforward enough tribute to the work of Ellington: Sophisticated - Caravan -Solitude are all words taken from Ellington titles; besides, virtually all my music is written in a caravan (or a Portakabin rather, to be honest), in solitude, and hopefully it's sophisticated ...
