Programme Note

Torture is without a question the cruelest, the ugliest and the most unfathomable of crimes; the magic wand that could abolish this outrage once and for all would be a priceless possession. Alas, cruel reality prevails. But the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) and its leader Inge Genefke are outstanding and encouraging representatives of the will to help the victims, and they also represent forceful opposition and courageous fight: there is hope – in spite of…

For the 199x-film (directed by Astrid Henning-Jensen) about the IRCT, Danish composer and trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg composed a beautiful and dignified theme, and I have composed this brief symphonic vision “around” this Mikkelborg theme. Music itself is obviously incapable and powerless against brutality and torture – but I still found it compelling to use my voice, my vocation and expression: not to be silent.

This piece is dedicated to IRCT.
