John Joubert: Duo for violin and cello, Op. 65
Allegro
Poco Lento
Vivace
My Duo Op. 65 was composed specially for Musica Antica e Nuova, for performance at this concert. The first movement is a Sonata structure with many changes of time signature, tonally centred on G. The second movement is a theme with three variations, in which the two instruments alternate in taking the lead. The theme is taken from music I composed for a production of the Agamemnon of Aeschylus in 1966. The final movement attempts to reconcile march and fanfare-like material, (also taken from my Agamemnon music) with more lyrical elements.
