Canción de los niños (2007) is a five-minute work for two-part children’s chorus and chamber orchestra. It was commissioned by Brooks Jones for the Children’s Chorus and Orchestra of Tepoztlán, Mexico. Brooks Jones and I have collaborated previously on the evening-long folk celebration Adoración Ambulante (1994), which he conceived, directed and commissioned, also for the village of Tepoztlán.
The Spanish text is drawn from Biblical references to children and peace, centering around the “peaceable kingdom” passage from Isaiah which begins, “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb…” and ends, “…and a little child shall lead them.” Also included are the traditional Arab and Jewish greetings and responses “Peace be with you…and with you be peace” in Spanish, Arabic and Hebrew. The music springs from the Mexican mariachi tradition, in particular the Jarocho style of Veracruz. A one-bar chaconne gives the work its harmonic foundation, with voices and trumpets alternating in thirds throughout.

Hechos (Acts) 2: 17,19 - En los postreros días, derramaré mi Espíritu Santo sobre toda la humanidad. Haré prodigios arriba, en el cielo, y abajo en la tierra. (And it shall come to pass that in the last days, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh. And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath.)
Isaías (Isaiah) 11:6 - El lobo morará con el cordero, y el leopardo se echará con el cabrito; el becerro y el leoncillo andarán juntos, y un niño los guiará. (The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion together; and a little child shall lead them).
La paz sea contigo. As-salaam u alaykum . Shalom aleichem . (Peace be upon you.)
