        Programme Note

        This eleven-minute piece is my first for brass band. It was composed in July of this year, the very hot month when international events included the bizarre in Trinidad and the maniacally dangerous in Kuwait. Simultaneously the roof of my house was being noisily repaired, my bees became very bad tempered and the mill stream was reduced to an insignificant trickle. There is no obvious connection between these facts and the work, which is in two parts the first slow and romantic with an improvisatory feel, and the second a driving Allegro, the loudness and violence of which is twice tempered by lyrical episodes. The title merely reflects the fact that the piece was written at Mill Gill, my Wensleydale home.
