Programme Note

I
II - Lento molto

This Quartet was commissioned by the York Festival for performance by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet.

In my first Quartet of 11 years ago I took the opportunity of writing movements in the normally accepted quartet forms and felt better for it. In this Quartet I have used much freer forms, the first movement being a fairly free set of variations on a theme, which is rich with different sorts of material. The subsequent 'variations' tend to concentrate on one of these bits of material using others as subsidiary material. The overall plan is one of a gradual increase in tempo, beginning andante sostenuto and culminating in an allegro impetuoso. This ends very violently and is succeeded by a very calm opening to the second movement which sounds almost like an epilogue. Both movements contain a section of multiple ostinato, which create a sense of varied, but essentially static, music.
